Not every Curacao licence is the same licence
Curacao licences get treated as a single thing, usually dismissively. They are not a single thing. Under the framework introduced with the island's new gaming ordinance, licences carry different statuses, and the difference between them is real enough to change how much a badge is worth.
The statuses

The statuses sit on a ladder, and where an operator sits on it is public. That is the part most people miss: the register is open, searchable, and shows the current status of every licensee rather than a yes or no.
Why indefinite is the one to look for
An indefinite licence means the regulator finished its assessment and granted a full authorisation rather than a time-boxed one. It is the strongest status the authority awards and, in practice, a minority of licensees hold it.
It is not a guarantee of anything. An operator with an indefinite licence can still pay slowly, write harsh terms, or lose the status later. What it does tell you is that the company went through a complete assessment rather than being waved through on a provisional basis while paperwork continued.
The contrast is useful because so many crypto casinos are new. A site launched this year will hold a provisional licence by definition, which is not a criticism, it is arithmetic. A site holding an indefinite one has been through something. How to read the register yourself
It takes two minutes and it is the single highest-value check available to a player.
Find the licence number in the site's footer or terms. Open the regulator's own register, not a link the casino provides, and search the number. Confirm three things: the status, the company name, and the list of domains the licence covers.
The domain check is the one that catches the common trick. A footer seal can link to a completely genuine certificate held by a completely genuine company for a different website. Everything verifies except the thing that matters. If the domain in your address bar is not on the certificate, the licence protects somebody else.
What the framework now requires
The newer Curacao ordinance brought in obligations that the old system did not meaningfully enforce: segregation of player funds from operating money, a named complaints route, and, for operators taking crypto, requirements around wallet screening and treasury separation on a published timetable.
Whether enforcement matches the text is still being established. The record is short and the regulator is young in its current form. But the written standard is considerably higher than the one that gave Curacao its reputation, and operators who completed a full assessment under it are not in the same position as those who bought a sublicence under the old regime.
The practical takeaway
Do not treat Curacao as a single signal. Check the status, the company, and the domain. An indefinite licence naming the exact site you are on, held by the company named in the terms, is a meaningfully different proposition from a provisional one, and both are different again from a seal that links to an image.
